From the top levels of corporate world to the smallest of business owners, the concept of Resilience is boasted of again, and again. A quality that many are quick to ascribe to themselves, this may be one of the most misunderstood attributes a person can have. To seek out Resilience is to deliberately seek out tribulations, loss, grief, and ultimately darkness. While there are seminars, workshops, and lectures on how you too can be more “Resilient”, it is doubtful those involved have the slightest notion of what true Resilience is.
Resilience: the one skill no one ever wants to develop. No one is excited by this, for this is the silver lining that comes with real loss, true adversity. It could be argued that the higher one rises in prominence, the less likely they are to possess it… but such debates are trite and without purpose. This isn’t for them, this is for you.
For those who have fallen upon misfortune… those that have suffered… know that your pain is not without purpose. This is not to comfort you, for you are beyond a point where such comfort would change anything. This is perspective, and truth; for while you suffer unimaginable torment, you are gaining something precious. Something rare. You have an opportunity to develop true resilience, but first you must survive.
To survive such pain is not about what you do, but more what you don’t do. Don’t run, don’t dissociate, don’t lie to yourself and dont let anyone lie to you. You don’t deserve this suffering, this loss, but it is your loss… your suffering. Not theirs. Own that loss. In time, try to stare that pain right in it’s bloody face and see it for what it is: life.
As children, we rail about life being unfair… and who hasn’t been told that “life isn’t fair”. Yet no one believes it… not really. We expect life to be fair. We expect everything to mean something. The truth is both dark as a winter night and bright as the sun: the only meaning in life is that which we find in ourselves. Your life was never going to be fair, but that doesn’t mean you curl up and surrender… for how many have suffered just as you? How many still suffer, and lack the strength to stand again?
Seek meaning in yourself, and what light you can bring from that darkness. There is always light in there, but it’s hidden, and harder still to find. Don’t give up on yourself because you’ve fallen… you are not done, you can still stand. If you find youself stuck, find a person, or any possible way, to stand again. Don’t turn to cheap tricks, for you are not truly standing on your own if you require drugs or vices to function. You can do better warrior, and you know it. God speed.
